SBI should take initiatives in agriculture: minister

PANAJI: Union Minister of State for Finance Sripad Naik has urged State Bank of India to take the initiative in setting up pilot projects for agriculture in Goa.

Though banks were giving support to poverty alleviation programmes and self-employment generation schemes of the government, much more efforts were needed by the sponsoring agencies and banks if the schemes have to achieve their targets in the near future, he said at the district level review committee meeting here on Thursday.

Farmers should be encouraged to take up floriculture, spices and vegetable cultivation in a big way, he said.

Naik said Nabard and agriculture department should play a pro-active role in this regard.
